Ryan Bell says that coming to study computing at Forth Valley College was a ‘lightbulb’ moment for him academically and has helped him to become more focussed and motivated.
Ryan (24) from Limerigg near Falkirk is currently in the first year of his partnership BSc Hons in Software Development and Cyber Security, and now hopes to go on to complete his HND at FVC, before moving on to complete his Hons at the University of Stirling.
He said: “I knew about the College as I had tried a construction course, but it was not for me. I was working in retail, but again I knew in my heart that wasn’t what I wanted to do. I enrolled on the Access to Computing course and progressed onto the NC from there.
“Never in a million years did I think I would be enrolling on a university degree course, but that is how it has worked out, but I love it and I am looking forward to having a career in software development or cyber security.
“I have to admit that when I first started on the Access course I struggled a wee bit, but the course, lecturers and the College have helped me to focus and helped with my motivation and it really was like a ‘lightbulb’ moment when I started to really enjoy learning and studying.
“The lecturers have played a big role in that as they are very supportive and helpful and the facilities are great and modern which also helps. I never used to like or enjoy getting up early in the morning… but now I do as I am motivated to do well at my studies and attain my degree. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
“The social aspect of coming here is great and I am delighted to have meet some great new friends and also play five-a-side with students and lecturers. The best bit though is the partnership degree course as it prepares you for university, without throwing you in at the deep end. You attend College for two years and your confidence and skills grow to help you transition into university. I love it.”
