Rhys King (22) from Tain is a Mechanical Engineering Modern Apprentice working with FieldCore – part of the global GE Vernova company – and is currently studying and training at Forth Valley College’s Falkirk Campus.
He said: “I am in my first year as a Mechanical Fitter with FieldCore a gas turbine maintenance company – part of the GE Vernova organization – and we specialize in field service maintenance across the globe, ensuring that the world energy needs are maintained.
“The Modern Apprenticeship programme at FVC is a new way forward which may entice more people into doing an apprenticeship and the mechanical and electrical courses we study at the College have provided me with the essential foundation of knowledge needed to progress into the engineering industry.
“The College has modern facilities with a vast range of equipment which would be used in real world scenarios, giving us an understanding of what we may encounter. The lecturers also provide a great support network and ensure that we learn to the best of our abilities.
“I would recommend the MA programme as it has been an integral role to my understanding of both theory and the practical aspect of engineering.
The best bit for me has been working with my hands in the workshop, in particular with lathes, as I’ve never worked with any machine like them before. So I have had new challenges to overcome and new skills to develop
“The advice I would give to a any new potential MA student would be that it is an excellent opportunity to develop and gain new skills and knowledge from people who have first-hand experience in this field of expertise.”
