Emma McDonald (31) a former BSc Applied Biological Science student from Alloa credits FVC for providing the foundation that shaped her into the PhD scientist and STEM Ambassador she is today.
She said: “When reflecting on my educational journey, I credit Forth Valley College as the foundation that shaped me into the scientist I am today. The comprehensive laboratory experience afforded me a sense of confidence, which was readily apparent in my later years of study. We had the advantage of superior facilities, resources, and support, resulting in a more seamless university experience.
“Moreover, serving as a STEM ambassador provided me with valuable experience in executing STEM events within the local community and college settings, something I continue to do to this day. This foundation was instrumental in preparing me for the academic rigor of the third and fourth years of study at university, ultimately resulting in the attainment of a first-class BSc with honors degree in Applied Biological Science.
“This achievement opened the door to numerous opportunities, including my current enrollment in a PhD program at the University of Stirling. In summary, the invaluable education and guidance at FVC remain an essential contributor to my ongoing success.
Emma explained how she changed careers, choosing Forth Valley College as the place to help her budding career in STEM flourish.
She went on: “I was working within the Financial Services Industry for six years before discovering my aspiration to transition into a STEM-related field. Due to lacking the necessary qualifications, I embarked on a search for access courses, leading me to the discovery of Forth Valley College.
“Seeking guidance from module coordinators at FVC, I was able to select a suitable course of study, which paved the way for progression towards a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biological Science. Notably, I found the prospect of completing
the initial two years of my degree program at the college campus particularly appealing, preparing me for my final years at university.
“The facilities at the College were exceptional, and I am confident that with the advent of the new Falkirk Campus, they have become even more advanced. However, the paramount factor in the success of myself, and my fellow Applied Biological Science students, is wholly attributed to the faculty members at FVC.
“They consistently went above and beyond, providing drop-in sessions for additional assistance, extensive practical laboratory experience that proved invaluable in the later years, and personalized one-on-one attention when necessary.
“The inclusive and supportive learning environment fostered by the faculty at FVC played an instrumental role in my academic achievements, and I am sincerely grateful to all who contributed to my progress. As I did not possess a background in science at the onset of my enrollment, there were times when I encountered difficulties keeping pace with my peers. Especially during a time that I was experiencing health concerns. Nonetheless, the faculty members ensured that I had the guidance and resources necessary to maintain progress through the course.
“In my experience, I have found that the training I received at FVC has been instrumental in advancing my career to the next level, specifically in pursuing a PhD. Having achieved a first-class degree, I had initially contemplated pursuing a master’s degree before embarking on a PhD program.
“However, after consultation with my current supervisor, I felt that the skills and knowledge acquired during my studies at FVC and the University of Stirling, were sufficient to enable me to pursue a PhD directly. The in-depth coverage of GLP and GMP protocols during my training at FVC instilled in me a sense of confidence that I could seamlessly transition into this role.
“I would highly recommend Forth Valley College and the Applied Biological Sciences degree, due to the immense benefits it offers. The program provides an extensive education across multiple disciplines, and a vast array of industrial
placements to choose from in your final years. Additionally, the level of support provided during the first two years of the course is unparalleled, which significantly aids in the development of students’ skills and knowledge. Therefore, I strongly recommend this program to anyone interested in pursuing a career in this sector.
“One of the most fulfilling experiences for me has been accomplishing tasks despite feeling overwhelmed at times, and doing so with the invaluable support of exceptional individuals, including both students and faculty. Undoubtedly, my most memorable moments have occurred at FVC. Transitioning from a non-academic background to pursuing a PhD has transformed my life, enabling me to participate in diverse opportunities. As I advance in my academic career, this journey remains incredibly enriching and rewarding.
“When considering post-secondary education, or even if you’re making a complete change in career like myself, the prospect of attending university immediately may be a bit overwhelming to some. With large class sizes of 200 or more students, it can be challenging to establish the support you may need to keep up with your course work.
“However, by choosing an integrated degree program at FVC and the University of Stirling, potential students can experience a more gradual transition into their studies, allowing for a deeper comprehension of their chosen subject matter.
“Through this approach, students can acquire essential laboratory skills, broaden their knowledge base across a range of topics, and build the self-assurance necessary for academic success in their final two years of study. For anyone looking to embark on this journey, or those already involved in Applied Biological Science, take advantage of your time there and utilize all the resources in front of you, you won’t regret it!
“During my time at Forth Valley College, I had the opportunity to participate in a range of enriching experiences that left a lasting impression. However, what I loved most about my experience there was threefold. Firstly, I was able to connect with individuals who have since become lifelong friends. Secondly, I
gained a solid foundation of knowledge that I can continue to build upon as I progress in my academic and professional pursuits.
“Finally, the STEM events that we organized within the local community were not only enjoyable, but also facilitated my growth as a student and young professional. Overall, my time at FVC was an incredibly positive experience that provided me with a strong sense of community, academic rigor, and personal growth.”
