Three days of Staff Development workshops were held at Forth Valley College’s Falkirk and Stirling Campuses recently.

More than 300 curriculum based colleagues took part and feedback already received has shown the event to have been “positive” and “completely relevant” as FVC moves forward into a new academic session.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for increased interaction and dialogue about some really topical discussion points, such as student behaviour and artificial intelligence, whilst also highlighting the systems that support students and staff, from the student journey to the importance of external verification.

Information sessions across both days were organised and run by the Learning and Quality Department; Digital Skills Academy (LDSA), Inclusion and Student Services; the Business Transformation Team, Human Resources and Student Administration, as well as welcome input from College Development Network (CDN)

Over the three days there were updates on Quality and Systems Info, Human Resources and GTCS registration, and workshops on the ‘Changing Learner’ and ‘AI – Challenges and Opportunities’, which were supported by CDN.  All events certainly caught the attention and imagination of all those who attended.

Helen Young, new Director of Curriculum for the Department of Care, Sport Business and Communities, but who had previously been Head of the Department of Learning and Quality, said “This years’ staff development sessions were exactly what was needed to get the new academic session off to an amazing start. It has never been more important to focus on our ‘changing learner’ and also how we can work with artificial intelligence as we move forward. There were lots of great discussion points and suggestions from staff over the events and I look forward to more great development opportunities in 2023-24.”

Rob McDermott, new Head of Learning and Quality (Interim), said: “It was great to spend the time with colleagues building on the success of last year’s sessions, whilst also responding to requests from teaching staff and managers alike, about what they need to know to help them with their delivery and management. We hope to build on this success throughout the year, offering further opportunities to learn and develop.”

Forth Valley College staff who attended the staff development sessions are encouraged to complete the Staff Information Sessions - Attendee Feedback Survey to give their views on the sessions.
