A showcase event to round off the STEM @ The Helix programme was held at Forth Valley College’s Falkirk Campus on Tuesday 19 June.
Following on from the STEM @ The Helix workshops held on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May, the Falkirk Community Trust, Falkirk Council and Forth Valley College developed programme of events was also supported by Falkirk Community Schools Charity and the Developing Young workforce Forth Valley.
Local secondary school students and Forth Valley College lecturers helped to organise and run Science Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) events, experiments and workshops at the Helix Park and this included first year school pupils taking part in a series of interactive workshops, a STEM project and a celebration of their achievements on the Friday, while more hands on projects and interactive workshops were enjoyed by pupils and their families on the Saturday.
At the Tuesday 19 June event, a team of students from St Mungo’s in Falkirk were hailed as the overall winners for their design of a joint bridge to test water quality. In this they used surveying, science, structural mechanics and model making skills. On the night St Mungo’s also won prizes for having the fastest and most improved rocket cars.
Stephen Stirrat, FVC lecturer in Construction, said: “They all did fabulously well and their presentation to the judges on the night was excellent. I have been very impressed with all of their work.”
