A group of NQ Pathway to Fitness, Health and Exercise students organised a sports fun day for local primary school pupils recently.
Around 100 Primary 3 and 4 children from Victoria Primary School flocked to the nearby FVC Falkirk Campus on Monday 22 April, for the event which was organised by Carolyn Russell (42), Louise Monteith (20), Ben Fish (17) and Logan Rose (17), as part of the Event Organisation Unit of their course.
During the day, the kids took part in football, basketball and exercise to music in the morning and enjoyed a sports fun day in the afternoon, making use of the College’s state-of-the-art sports hall and gym facilities.
RJM Sports – based in Grangemouth – were also on hand to provide some sponsorship and medals for the children at a special prize-giving near the end of the event.
Carolyn Russell, said: “Fitness, health and exercise are so important to all ages, especially children. When kids play it provides a primary foundation for learning, helps them problem solve, teaches them how to interact with other children and burns off lots of energy. By showing children that sports and exercise can be fun at such a crucial stage in their childhood, it can help pave the way to a healthy life and who knows, we may have some budding athletes in the mix now. The kids were all amazing and we loved every minute of having them in the College making our event just that bit more special seeing their happy, exhausted faces at the end.”
Sports Lecturer, Iain Milligan, said: “This event was another example of the fantastic opportunities that the NQ Pathway to Fitness, Health & Exercise students provide members of the local community to participate in physical activity in a fun and engaging way, whilst showcasing the quality of the facilities within the Falkirk Campus.
“The organisational skills of Ben, Carolyn, Logan and Louise were a credit to Forth Valley College, highlighted by the positive feedback provided by the pupils and teachers from Victoria Primary School. The contribution from staff members Wai Mun Lee and Darren Dods, as well as the support from students from the NQ Pathways to Sports Coaching, also need to be acknowledged in the successful running of this event.”
Nicola Soroka from Victoria Primary School, said: “Primary 3 and 4 pupils from Victoria Primary School had the opportunity to participate in a sporting event at Forth Valley College organised as part of the Pathways to Health, Fitness and Exercise course. Throughout this fabulous experience, pupils displayed the school motto of Try, Believe, Achieve, and had lots of fun.”
Janet Marshall from RJM Sports, said: “We were delighted to get involved in this event and provide sponsorship and medals for the Victoria Primary pupils who took part. I understand it was a wonderful event and the students should be very proud of themselves to organise such an enjoyable sports day for the youngsters from Victoria Primary School. Well done to everyone involved.”
