AECOM visit

Three project managers from AECOM visited the Falkirk Campus on Monday 2 October to give Architecture and Civil Engineering students the benefit of their considerable experience.

Miranda Tosi, Karolina Wasek and Kier White gave wonderfully visual presentations to an audience of students from the Department of STEM and Construction, gathered in the Steeple Suite.

The photograph shows front row (from left to right) Kier White, Marinda Tosi, Karolina Wasek, and Matthew Wong all from AECOM and back row (from left to right) Stuart Taylor, Kevin McLaren, Claire Brierton, and Heather McCorkindale from FVC.

Kevin McLaren, FVC STEM and Construction Lecturer, said: “Marinda originally studied architecture and then did a Masters in Construction Project Management and has been with AECOM for four years.

“She discussed her recent £30m project in Livingston that under a previous team had been progressing in the wrong direction without clear direction. The AECOM Project Management team were brought in and got  the project team working together harmoniously. Soon the project was back on course and the client was ultimately delighted to get the building they had always hoped they would get.

"Karolina studied as an interior designer but like Mari has added project management to her skillset, by undertaking a Masters degree in Project Management with BIM. She started working for AECOM in 2019. Karolina is an expert in managing the BIM (Building Information Modelling) process.

"She demonstrated how BIM has been used to excellent effect on the £850m Hillington Hospital Redevelopment Project, including her experience in managing associated processes on this project, how it benefited from utilising BIM Level 2 and any challenges that occurred during implementation.

"Mari and Karolina both explained the project manager’s role and how the BIM process is managed even though there are lots of different designers inputting to the digital 3D model at the same time in real time. We even learned how on some sites robots are walking around building projects giving instantaneous feedback on progress and the accuracy of the building work!

"Kier White has been working with AECOM since 2014. We are delighted that he has been able to visit FVC again – this time outlining the work of AECOM on a major project for the NHS and MOD. Again the use of BIM was very much in evidence in Kier’s presentation – the 3D amination being a highlight.

“Overall, a fun - and educational - time was had by all. Thank you AECOM, we hope you can come back next year!”
