Forth Valley College’s Pricing Manager Helen Sutton was bowled over recently to be part of an award winning team at the Sunday Mail/sportscotland Scottish Sport Awards.
As one of the five directors of the Westquarter and Redding Cricket Club, Helen was at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Thursday 5 December, to pick up the Local Club of the year award from Stewart Harris Chief Executive of sportscotland.
They were presented with the accolade for being an ‘outstanding amateur sports club that has made a real contribution to everyday life in the community’.
This has included: raising their membership from just 40 (one adult team and 15 kids) to more than 200 (two adult teams and 125 kids) in less than five years: making the club financially secure for the next 25 years - mainly by building a much needed community nursery on their land; working locally with Disability Sport to introduce table cricket locally; creating All Stars clubs for advanced provision; setting up a breakfast club at a local primary school; and organising a monthly Alzheimer’s Scotland ‘Try Something New’ club.
Forth Valley College sports students have also recently been involved in some coaching roles at the club.
Helen, said: “I personally feel fantastic and so proud of everything the club has achieved so far… and it is just the start for us. We are looking to source funding now to building new changing facilities for our girls’ section. We are really pleased to have won this prestigious national award and feel very honoured to have done so up against two really great nominees like Langholm Rugby Club and Northwest Boxing Club in Kilmarnock.”
