Countdown on to meet 18th Edition regulations
18th Edition at FVC

Electricians in the Forth Valley area have just over 100 days to supercharge their CVs with the new wiring regulations qualification.

The 18th Edition – otherwise known as BS 7671:2018 – outlines the new standards which need to be applied to all new and amended electrical installations in the UK– and the highly experienced Forth Valley College Electrical Safety Team are ready to support industry professionals in achieving just that.

As of January 1, 2019, all new and amended installations must comply with the requirements covered in the 18th Edition wiring regulations and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), is urging all electrical professionals to ensure they are familiar with the new requirements as soon as possible.

FVC’s well established and respected Electrical Safety Training Centre based at the Falkirk Campus, has already begun training large numbers of electricians to get them up to speed with the new 18th Edition regulations and successfully achieve the required qualification.

These courses are available in both a 3-day and 1-day format with exams conducted the morning after the final day’s training. The courses are run both during the day and in the evening to deal with the very high demand from industry. Available course dates can be found here https://www.forthvalley.ac.uk/courses/electrical-safety

Personnel working on the design, installation, inspection and testing of wiring systems need to be prepared for the changes in order to remain compliant as some of these changes will affect most electrical installation work. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Additions to the scope of BS 7671
  • Changes to the disconnection times for certain circuits
  • Further requirements for circuit protection in domestic dwellings
  • Considerations for Arc Fault Detection in many installations
  • Supporting of wiring systems
  • Inspection and testing procedures.

David Milliken, Power Station and Utilities Asset, Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer at INEOS, who recently completed his 18th Edition course at FVC said: “The facilities at the College are first class and the lecturer was very knowledgeable. His course delivery was well paced and good use was made of his experience to give great examples to illustrate learning points.”

Alistair McKean, FVC’s Lead Commercial Trainer, said: “The change from the 17th to the 18th edition regulations is a significant one – and preparing for it here at FVC, under the guidance of our professional and experienced delivery team, is a great way to make the transition as smooth as possible.”
