A Forth Valley College CompEx and Electrical Safety course trainer used lockdown to help transform his department’s digital learning needs.

During lockdown, Alan Montgomery a Trainer /Assessor in the Commercial Delivery Department, was tasked with the development of the CompEx and Electrical Safety courses to allow the team to deliver these online without compromising the student experience or standard of delivery, which FVC is well known for throughout the industry.

Alan has worked tirelessly during the last five months upgrading all of the current course materials including: pre-course study guides, presentations, candidate support material and practice exam questions and then transferred all this onto platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Sway, so that these could seamlessly form part on the online delivery program.

FVC are now delivering various courses online and feedback from our students and the very high pass rates, have been very positive indeed.  This work has also allowed the face to face delivery to be improved where candidates can scan QR codes on student course work packs, allowing them to download tasks and sample questions for each stage of the course.

With the help of colleagues Lisa Hachemi and Dorothy Erskine, Alan has also driven the development of the Pre-course information sent out by the college’s administrative team to students. This means they can now download these guides onto their mobile phones with instant access to key course details, including: electronic registration forms, timings, what to expect, what to bring on day one and pre-course study material.

Alan, said: "I was grateful for the opportunity to work on the development of our course materials to ensure our candidates get the best, most interactive learning opportunities possible to support their learning.”

Alistair McKean, Lead Commercial Trainer for this team said: “Alan has worked tirelessly during the lockdown period on various projects including improving our online delivery portfolio which has involved mastering online training tools such as Microsoft Teams, Forms and Sway. He then worked on the development of new training material, transferring our original material online and supporting the rest of the team including our external support staff to be able to use these fantastic resources.

“During the lockdown the team have successfully delivered various online training courses to both College apprentices and our commercial students.  This has allowed us to create a blended delivery model where classroom, workshop and online training work in harmony to keep the students safe during this challenging time.

“I feel very fortunate to work alongside Alan and the rest of this great team that continually innovate new products and training/assessment methods in order to improve all aspects of our commercial delivery training programmes, so that all students get the best experience possible and meet our department aim:

"‘Build a dynamic business model to meet the ever changing demands of industry, whilst providing the highest level of safety training for employers delivered by a passionate, knowledgeable team of instructors within state of the art facilities’.”
