The Professional Development Award: An Introduction to Tutoring English to Speakers of Other Languages (ITESOL) (SCQF Level 6), is for those working with English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learners, but who may have no prior recognised ESOL teaching/tutoring qualifications. It is also appropriate for teachers and lecturers of other subjects who have ESOL learners in their classes and wish to develop a broader understanding of issues related to English language development and it impacts on their teaching/tutoring contexts.

This ITESOL PDA is designed to:

· provide underpinning core knowledge required to work with ESOL learners

· promote awareness of English language skills development

· develop skills in integrating language skills in the context of ESOL delivery

· provide opportunities to develop practical tutoring skills in the context of

The course will run for 2 hours a week in the evening, over the academic year from August 2023 to June 2024, and delivery will be a blended approach of in class and online provision.

Two mandatory units, 16 SCQF credit points

  • Language and Learning in ESOL
  • Developing ESOL: Tutoring Skills

  • ESOL tutoring,
  • Volunteer ESOL work,
  • Supporting ESOL pupils in school

  • CELTA
  • PDA TESOL level 9 and 10

  • Completion of a personal statement detailing why you wish to apply, and any experience to date 
  • Be working with or have access to work with a small group of ESOL learners 
  • National 5 or equivalent SCQF level 5 English/Communication competency – based on personal statement
  • Candidates whose first language is not English should have English language competence at least at SCQF level 6, CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) C1 across the four linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing- You may be asked for evidence

Student Paying Fees

Fees of less than £100 must be paid in full. Payment by instalment is available, provided the course fee is greater than £100. You can access a direct debit form here

An initial 30% deposit is required in order to secure your place. Instalments can be paid via direct debit over the duration of the course, up to a maximum of a 4-month period. Employer Paying Fees

If your employer is paying for your tuition fees, an Employer Agreement Form or letter from your employer must be submitted prior to or upon enrolment. You can access the Employer Agreement Form here and this should be returned to Evening Admissions -eveninginfo@forthvalley.ac.uk

Fee Waiver

Some students may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver if in receipt of certain types of benefits. Fee waiver evidence must be submitted either before or upon enrolment.  Refer to our Tuition and Fee Waiver Policy for further information.

ITA Funding

This course is eligible for ITA funding. You may be eligible if you are:

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Not in education or involved in any other SDS funded programme
  • Unemployed and looking to get back into work
  • Employed and earning less than £22,000 per year
  • Resident in Scotland

If you wish to use ITA funding towards the cost of this course, you must first apply for the ITA funding through the My World of Work website. ITA funding will cover up to £200 of course fees.

You will not be able to enrol for your course online if using ITA funding. Once you’ve applied for funding, you will receive a confirmation email from SDS and the college with instructions on how to book your course.
