NC Childhood Practice

This course provides a broad-based study of the range of topics, both theory and practice based, related to early learning and childcare that are required for progression to areas of study or employment at support worker level within a childhood practice setting.

Successful completion of this course will allow learners to work in an early learning and childcare setting, as a member of staff who has delegated responsibility for providing support to children and young people; and who provide support to the process of the health and wellbeing of children and young people.  

It will also enhance communication and interpersonal skills and there is a weekly placement (usually one day per week) at an approved establishment selected by the College.  

The course also provides opportunities to gain the formal qualifications required to progress to HNC level study in relevant disciplines, including HNC Childhood Practice.

The NC Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 6 is made up of 12 SQA unit credits including the following subjects.

  • Child Development
  • Child Development: Theory
  • Services for children and young people
  • Planning for Practice
  • Planning for Practice: Workplace Experience
  • Sociology of Childhood
  • Providing an Inclusive Curriculum in Childhood Practice
  • Protecting and Promoting the Rights of the Child
  • Communication

  • The qualification has been identified as appropriate for early learning and childcare support workers and successful completion of the course, will enable students to seek employment to work with children in a range of public and private settings.
  • This qualification has been aligned to the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) requirements for a support worker in the care of children and young people in childhood practice settings. The NC Childhood Practice will allow learners to register as a support worker with the SSSC upon completion.

  • All current learners must achieve a pass in all programme units and achieve a minimum of 90% attendance to progress to the next level of study
  • HNC Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 7)

Mandatory:

  • Participation at an information session
  • Successful interview
  • Clear Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check required. Further Information on the PVG Scheme will be issued to successful applicants prior to enrolment.

    Plus one of the following:

  • Four National 5 awards including English (or equivalent)
  • Successful completion of all units/ exams within the NC Child, Health and Social Care (Early Years) (SCQF Level 5)
  • Applicants who do not meet these criteria, but have relevant paid workplace experience or alternative qualifications will be considered
