FA Construction Skills (Schools)

Please note that only secondary school pupils staying on at school and who will be starting S5/S6 in August 2024 are eligible to apply for this course.

This course provides students with experience of a broad range of practical construction trade skills and aims to give individuals greater confidence in their own abilities and inform them about opportunities for progression within the Construction sector.

The course allows the learner to work on a project for a client with construction industry employer input.

The deadline for applications is Friday 15 March 2024 but early applications are encouraged.

The course covers the following skills required within Construction trades :

  • Workshop Skills
  • Employability Skills
  • Construction Materials
  • Health and Safety
  • The interpretation of Technical Drawings
  • Maths/Numeracy for Construction
  • Communication
  • Information Technology

Progression toward careers in a variety of construction and engineering disciplines. Examples include:

  • Architect
  • Construction trade
  • Civil Engineer
  • Mechanic/Fitter
  • Electrician
  • Welder
  • Fabricator
  • Construction project manager
  • Electrical/Electronics Technician
  • Instrument Technician

Progression toward college or university courses in a variety of construction and engineering disciplines. Examples include:

  • Architectural Design
  • Construction trade apprenticeship
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanic/Fitter
  • Electrician
  • Welder
  • Fabricator
  • Construction project management
  • Technical Apprenticeship

  • You should have achieved or be working towards Nat 5 English and Nat 5 Maths (or Applications of Maths).
  • The motivation to work as part of a team.
  • Applicants who meet the entry requirements will be invited to a selection event which will take place on either Tuesday 16 April (Falkirk), Thursday 18 April (Alloa) or Friday 19 April (Stirling). 

Please note, this college course runs during exam leave periods and attendance at college is expected.
