Future Skills Programme boosts students’ employment chances

Wednesday 3rd June 2026

Students graduated recently from the Future Skills Programme course – which was funded through the Scottish Government and organised as a joint initiative between Forth Valley College and Falkirk Council’s Learning & Employability Team.

The Future Skills: Pathways to Employment Programme, supported by the Scottish Government's Grangemouth Just Transition Fund, aims to support Grangemouth and Falkirk Council residents to enter the labour market.

Designed to equip individuals with the practical, technical and employability skills needed to access opportunities in Scotland’s growth sectors, including renewable energy, digital technology, engineering, construction, transport and logistics, the programme blended accredited training, industry engagement and personal development, and supported participants to build confidence, gain recognised qualifications and take meaningful steps towards sustainable careers.

Already one of the students who started the course Barry Riddell (47) from Bonnybridge is on the road to a new career after completing the programme – to find out more about Barry’s journey click here.

The programme’s aims were designed to:

  • Develop highly desirable and transferrable skills that support progression into sustainable employment
  • Build awareness of Scotland’s net zero transition and the demand for low-carbon skills
  • Enhance employability through hands-on learning, recognised qualifications and direct industry contact
  • Strengthen meta-skills such as self-management, social intelligence, innovation and resilience
  • Create pathways into further education, apprenticeships, employability programmes or direct employment.

Zak Stark, FVC’s Head of Commercial Training and Delivery who spoke to the graduating students at their short ceremony at FVC’s Falkirk Campus on Thursday 30 April, said: “The students should be extremely proud of what they have achieved through the Future Skills Programme. As well as developing practical and employability skills that are highly valued by employers, the programme has provided them with the opportunity to explore a range of career areas and gain a better understanding of the pathways available to them.

“This will support them to make informed decisions about their next steps, whether that is moving directly into employment, progressing into further study, or combining both as part of their longer term career journey. We are grateful to the Scottish Government and our partners at Falkirk Council’s Learning & Employability Team for supporting the delivery of this programme, and we look forward to building on its success through similar opportunities in the future.”
