A brand-new community race – run recently in Larbert and organised by two Forth Valley College staff, raising a total of £1,743.64 for Maggie’s Cancer Support – has proved to be such a success that it is now hoped it will become an annual event.
On Sunday 8 November 2025, runners of all abilities - including several FVC staff and students - took part in the first-ever 'Maggie’s 5K & 10K Chase', organised by Robert Myler, EPOS Co-ordinator, and Alistair McKean, Training & Business Development Manager at Forth Valley College. It is expected confirmation of the next run sometime in November 2026 (and how to register), will be released soon.
The 5K and 10K race event started and finished in Kinnaird Village, with routes designed to showcase the stunning scenery of the Falkirk area.
Both races were low-key but competitive, featuring manual timing and prizes for the top three male and female finishers. The main aim was to raise awareness and fund for a charity that has played a vital role in supporting families across Forth Valley.
This inaugural race was not just about running – it was about community spirit, giving back, and celebrating resilience in the face of adversity. With Falkirk already known for its strong sporting culture, it is hoped the Maggie’s 5K & 10K Chase will become a highlight in the local calendar. For Alistair, the cause is deeply personal. Maggie’s supported his family during his dad's cancer diagnosis and treatment, and his mum continued to volunteer at the centre to this day.
Alistair, said: “Maggie’s provided a lifeline to our family at the toughest time. They do incredible work, receive no government funding, and rely entirely on donations. This race was a chance for us as a community to say thank you.”
Robert, added: “This was our chance to come together as a community, get active, and raise vital funds for a charity that touches so many lives. We hope that in future years, whether you’re running, cheering, or donating – you’ll be part of something special.”
Maggie’s volunteers were on hand to support the day, with buckets available for loose change donations at registration. Participants and spectators were encouraged to give them a big cheer in recognition of their vital work.
The organisers also promoted sustainability, with water and fruit available at feed stations and recyclable paper cups provided. Participants were also asked to bring refillable cups where possible to help reduce landfill waste.
