‘Lights, Camera, Stirling!’ book signing launch held at FVC

Wednesday 29th April 2026

Forth Valley College’s Stirling Campus hosted the book signing launch of a fascinating guide to Scotland’s cinematic heartland – titled ‘Lights, Camera, Stirling!’ on Tuesday 28 April.

FVC’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at the Stirling Campus welcomed authors Dr Tom Christie and Julie Christie to a late morning event to talk about the journey behind their new release, answer questions from College students, staff and members of the wider Stirling public, perform readings and also sign copies of their new book which was on sale on the day.

The book - the second in a series behind ‘Lights, Camera, Dundee!’ released last year - details many of the most remarkable big and small screen films that have been set or filmed in location in the Stirling area, including the FVC Stirling Campus which was the location for scenes in a recent Rebus detective TV series.

Tom and Julie are multi-award winning directors of Stirling based Extremis Publishing and also creators of a popular FVC evening course – ‘Writing For Publication’. Tom himself is the author of 23 books and also hosts an engaging regular podcast called ‘The Extremis Publishing Podcast’ and the firm also have a bi-monthly newsletter called ‘Extremis Etc’.

Lisa MacLaren, FVC Learning Services Manager, said: “We were delighted to host Tom and Julie Christie as they launched their latest book which is a fantastic story of filmmaking in and around the Stirling area. It was great to welcome students, staff and members of the public to our Learning Resource Centre for this book launch, which is another event helping us to mark the National Year of Reading. We have worked closely with Tom, Julie and Extremis Publishing over the last couple of years and were excited to help them launch their latest book.

“Thanks go to Learning Skills and Resource Assistants Chris Duff, David Gentles and Wendy Gormley - for organising this event, to all the LRC and FixIt staff who made it possible on the day and to Coreetta Buchan a student from the NC Film TV course for coming along to film and record the proceedings.”

The new book celebrates the rich cinematic and television heritage of one of Scotland's most historic regions and shines a spotlight on the beautiful and unique locations of Stirling and Stirlingshire that have provided the backdrop to decades of film and television storytelling.

With world-famous sights such as Stirling Castle, the historic Church of the Holy Rude, the National Wallace Monument, Doune Castle, and the Falls of Dochart, amongst many others, the region feels tailor-made for the film camera. This book explains just why Stirling has become such a celebrated location for directors and production crews.

Beautifully illustrated with full colour photography, ‘Lights, Camera, Stirling!’ takes readers on a fascinating journey through the city's ancient streets, dramatic landscapes, and iconic landmarks, revealing how they have been transformed on screen across a wide range of productions. From period dramas to modern independent movies, the book uncovers the stories behind the scenes and the enduring appeal of the region which attracts filmmakers from across the world.

With a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation of local history, the authors explore how Stirling's distinctive character has made it a natural stage for cinematic creativity. This entertaining guide offers fresh perspectives on familiar places, and unveils some surprising features which filmed in the area that will hopefully attract new visitors to the city and its surrounding region.

"Living and working in Stirling, we know how much the region's cultural heritage means to the people who make Stirlingshire such a great place to be," said Julie Christie, one of the book's authors. "Writing this book was an amazing experience, as it allowed us to move beyond the best-known films that have used the area, and embrace some of the more unusual movies and TV series that have used Stirling for so many different types of setting."

Released by Stirling-based independent book publisher Extremis Publishing Ltd, ‘Lights, Camera, Stirling!’ is a celebration not only of film and television, but of the cultural and visual richness of the area itself.

The book is scheduled for official release on Thursday 30 April 2026, and is now available for pre-order from the Extremis Publishing website at: https://www.extremispublishing.com/lights-camera-stirling
