Free online courses are a gateway to a Modern Apprenticeship

Tuesday 3rd March 2026

Free, fully funded online introductory courses run through Forth Valley College’s website, could well be a gateway for anyone interested in securing a Modern Apprenticeship in the future.

As FVC celebrates Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2026 (2-6 March), many potential MAs are asking the question – how do we make employers want to take us on as a Modern Apprentice?

One way could be for them to complete one or more of the wide range of free, fully funded online Introduction or Preparation courses that could improve their CVs and enhance their chances of being taken on by local firms.

Caroline Hogg, FVC’s Head of Apprenticeships, said: “These free online Introductory and Preparation courses are ideal for anyone aged 15 and above who would like to enhance their CVs and find out more about potential trades they would like to do.

“Any employer thinking about taking on a new modern apprentice, would be impressed that that their new recruit had completed one of these courses and has a really good understanding of the skills, techniques and theory that will be needed in the workplace. These courses are ideal for senior phase school pupils looking to find out more about the Modern Apprenticeship programme. I would recommend them to anyone.”

More than 2,500 people signed up to do one of 28 courses (including some listed above) offered last year, but this year at least nine new courses have been added to the range to help prepare people for new careers and improve existing skills.

Open to everyone, the courses cover a range of subject areas from Nursing and IT and Software Development to Animal Care, Psychology and eSports.

New introductory courses include: Engineering, Painting and Decorating and Plumbing, with Bricklaying, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Make-up Artistry, Sport and Fitness, and Art and Design, with more subject areas to come.

The innovative courses can be completed remotely or through attending a FVC Campus and are specially designed to be self-paced, and have been created to help students learn, achieve goals, develop skills for their careers, help them try something new, or expand their knowledge.
