Carrondale residents’ student group going from strength to strength

What began as a short six-week course has blossomed into a truly inspiring success story for a group of residents at Carrondale Care Home in Falkirk.

Their enthusiasm, confidence, and determination to learn have surpassed all expectations, proving that ambition has no age limit, and what was once a brief programme, has become a powerful celebration of lifelong learning, resilience, and community spirit, as they become students on a Tuesday evening at FVC’s Falkirk Campus.

Led by Lecturer Kerry Kay and Additional Support Worker Linda Campbell, residents have embraced an impressive range of new skills, from mastering Microsoft Teams and creating presentations in PowerPoint, to exploring STEM activities, construction techniques, arts and crafts and fundraising.

The project is funded through the Falkirk Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, a Scottish Government programme, managed by CVS Falkirk and District. Plans are already underway to expand opportunities further, with residents keen to spend time in the college kitchen, beauty salon, and gym. The list of what they want to try next continues to grow and the activities the group undertakes at the College is improving their mental health and wellbeing  - promoting confidence, social interaction, reducing isolation.

Linda Campbell, FVC Additional Support Worker, said: “It is an absolute privilege to be part of their journey and to witness their enthusiasm and progress first-hand. The programme began as a six-week course, but thanks to securing additional funding, it has now been extended to run for the full year. All of the students are residents of Carrondale Residential Home, and they are absolutely amazing - such a breath of fresh air and genuinely eager to learn.

“Each challenge has been met with energy, humour, and a genuine eagerness to succeed. So strong is their commitment that many learners have asked for ways to continue practising at home—clear evidence that the spark for learning has well and truly been ignited.”
