HNC Working with Communities student Catriona (Cat) Robertson has been selected to take part in the UK-Germany Youth Summit on ‘Resilient Democracies – Youth shaping the Future’ in Berlin.
The event will take place from Thursday 19 March until Sunday 22 March and more than 1,500 people applied for the opportunity to attend - including another two of Cat’s classmates in the HNC Working with Communities course, who unfortunately missed out on selection this time.
The Summit brings together young people from the UK and Germany, creating a space to engage in intercultural dialogue and gain a deeper understanding of different perspectives.
Through creative workshops and meaningful conversations with peers, Cat will explore themes such as disinformation, civic engagement, diversity, and democracy. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on what democracy means in their daily lives, share ideas, and imagine the inclusive and resilient society they want to help shape.
The UK–Germany Youth Summit is a joint initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ), the UK Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The project is delivered by IJAB – the International Youth Service of the Federal Republic of Germany – and the British Council.
Cat (22) from Stirling, said: “Over the past few years I have become quite engaged with what is going on in society and how politics has an influence on our lives. This will be the first time that I have been to Germany and I am looking forward to experiencing their culture, especially tasting the beer! I am also keen to make connections with other community workers and students from another country.”
Lecturer Stewart Ritchie stated that: “I think this is a great opportunity for Cat to experience not only the culture of another country, but to be influential in shaping the future for the young people of tomorrow. This should present Cat with a real life situation where she can use the theories and thoughts that we have been working on in class.
“We look forward to finding out how Cat got on with her trip, whether she made any connections and if the beer was a good as she hoped!”
