Recording session experience pays off for Sound Production students

Thursday 3rd October 2024

An enthusiastic group of HND Sound Production students helped put the finishing touches to a track on a newly released debut album.

Led by Forth Valley College Lecturer Ian Fairclough, students Bill Turner, Roger Garner, Josh Wilson, Alfie Jack, Robert Beattie, and Ryan Hennessy, helped exciting newcomers ‘Afterlands’ record a track called ‘Rolling waves’ for their new album, at the Stirling Campus recording studios.

The students have moved on, but the debut album – called ‘We Are The Animals In The Night’ and shown here on vinyl by Ian – is available on Spotify and all major streaming services. Now Ian aims to further strengthen the links with the band, by taking his new first year students to a gig they are playing at the Tolbooth in Stirling in November.

Ian, said: “Last year we welcomed a band called ‘Afterlands’ in for an evening recording session with my second year HND students. We recorded a track called ‘Rolling Waves’ for their album ‘We Are The Animals In The Night’.

“The students got to sit in on all the technical aspects of the recording, and got invaluable insight into some of the creative and technical discussions between the artist and engineer and see them put into action. The FVC group also received a thank you credit on the album sleeve notes.

“The album has just been shortlisted for a SAY - Scottish Album of the Year - award and I’m now hoping to take a group of the new first year students along to their gig at the Tollbooth on Tuesday 26 November, to see the sound check and look round the PA and backline.”
