Pre Apps Painting For SDG Flag Day

A group of Pre-apprenticeship Painting and Decorating students have shown their true colours to make sure they support Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Flag Day on Thursday 25 September.

Supported by their lecturer Stuart MacKenzie the group painted a section of wall in their workshop to show how they are supporting SDG number 13 – Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

To do this they have given up using disposable paper and pencils when working through quizzes and writing projects and have turned to using LCD writing screens and styluses to limit what they dispose of during their studies.

Student Piper Werkhoven (17) from Falkirk is seen here with lecturer Stuart MacKenzie showing off her LCD screen and also the new wall image she and her classmates used their newfound P&D skills to create on the wall.

She said: “It has been fund to get involved in supporting SDG Flag Day. I want to be a Painter and Decorator and the course is fun and enjoyable.”

Stuart added: “Using the screens allows us to meet SDG number 13 and we are all very proud of that. All the Pre-App students were delighted to get involved in the wee project right from the start.”

A month long global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) awareness raising campaign is well underway and Forth Valley College are calling for staff, students and College departments to share their SDG journeys in the run up to Flag Day on September 25.

Many of FVC’s classes, groups and departments already support one or more of the 17 SDGs - https://sdgs.un.org/goals - and the College is looking to recognise how others can get involved in the run up to Thursday 25 September.

For more information on how to get involved at the College by providing a case study or supporting through social media, e-mail FVC’s Sustainability Project Manager Rory Hill on rory.hill@forthvalley.ac.uk or visit https://unglobalcompact.org/take-action/action/sdg-flag-day for more information.
