World Skills challenge for David at Falkirk Campus

Wednesday 2nd September 2026

A first year Welding Modern Apprentice put the skills he has learned at Forth Valley College, to the test recently by taking on a regional heat challenge in the World Skills Welding competition.

David Williams (18) from Sauchie who works for Falcon Catering, was able to score enough points to enter the regional competition and was invited to complete the four weld challenge at the FVC Falkirk Campus before the summer break, while being monitored by his lecturers.

STEM and Construction Lecturers John Sheridan, Ryan Mowbray and Pavol Karlik and Technician David Murray, encouraged, timed and monitored David as he worked his way through four different welding process he had to use the MMA, MIG and TIG welding processes, to complete various joints whilst using different metals such as Carbon steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminium.

After he completed his tasks, David’s work was packaged up and sent to World Skills for them to judge. He is expected to hear back soon to see if he has done enough to make it to the next round soon.

David, said: “I enjoyed it. It was a great experience getting to weld in a different position and using different types of metal. I also liked the competition aspect of the whole challenge and I would do it again. I would also recommend it to other welding modern apprentices to try.

STEM and Construction Curriculum Manager Des McCabe, said: “David has really excelled himself in achieving this high standard of work, which has pushed his skill level well beyond the expected standard of the curriculum. The approach David took to learning new techniques relating to highly challenging positional welding, combined with learning the characteristics of welding difficult materials such as Aluminium has been brilliant to see. We introduced this at the start of block two and David and the Fabrication and Welding team have done an amazing job of reaching this standard in such a short time. Next year we plan to introduce this much earlier to hopefully have more learners hit the same high standards that David achieved
