Engineering students at Forth Valley College are set to get an inspirational lift by training on new equipment loaned to the College by the Energy Skills Partnership (ESP).
The new Hydraulics & Electrohydraulics workstation was officially installed on Tuesday 15 September at the Falkirk Campus, and FVC lecturers and technicians were given training on how to use it by Joe Boughey and expert from Didactic. This training was also supported by funding from ESP through the Scottish Government Offshore Wind Project.
Three Engineering Lecturers, Paddy Connelly, Robert Neilson and Ross McGeever and two Technicians, Marek Tkaczyk and Alex Miller as well as ESP Programme Manager Greg Haylott spent the day learning about the machinery, and how to develop staff knowledge and confidence in using the new equipment, so it can be effectively integrated into learning and teaching activities.
The equipment will support the delivery of practical engineering education and expose students to technologies used in modern industrial environments. The workstation covers both:
- Hydraulics: the use of pressurised fluid systems to generate force and movement.
- Electrohydraulics: the integration of hydraulic systems with electrical and electronic controls, sensors and automation technologies.
Richard Reid, Curriculum Manager in the Department of STEM and Construction, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Energy Skills Partnership for the loan of this Hydraulics and Electrohydraulics workstation. Opportunities such as this enable us to continually enhance our curriculum and ensure our students are learning with technology that reflects current industry practice. The equipment will provide valuable hands-on learning experiences, helping students bridge the gap between theory and practice while developing the skills and confidence needed for employment in the engineering sector. It is a fantastic addition to our workshops and will have a lasting positive impact on student learning."
