Students Bang their Drum for Scotland and FVC

A new Forth Valley College promotional film has been launched to wish Scotland well at the World Cup and also to showcase the wide range of courses and facilities available at the College.

The film features two prospective students practising Scott McTominay-style acrobatic shots, before embarking on a dribbling tour of the FVC Falkirk Campus, accompanied by the brilliant Dead Man Fall track ‘Bang Your Drum’ – sung by lead singer is Des McCabe, who is also a Curriculum Manager in FVC’s Department of STEM and Construction.

The film was inspired by the 1998 Nike World Cup advert which featured the Brazil national team waiting on a delayed flight and then suddenly breaking out a ball to play ‘Samba Soccer’ around the airport. The College’s film - which was shot during the Easter holidays when the campus was much quieter - features a dribbling tour of the FVC Falkirk Campus, and students and staff were recruited from a wide range of courses to use the tools of their trade to ‘Bang The Drum’ for Scotland and their subject areas.

Dead Man Fall’s track Bang Your Drum also featured on the last episode of the Late Show with Craig Ferguson, which aired in the USA in December 2014.

FVC’s PR and Media Officer Stuart Hall developed the idea with his Communications and Marketing Colleague Ethan McEwan, after chatting to Des about the progress of their sons at youth football level. An idea was hatched to develop a plan to make a film to promote the College facilities and also to dedicate it to Scotland doing well at the World Cup which starts this week in the USA.

Stuart said: “Both my son Andrew and Des’ son Daniel are very keen and talented young footballers and are also reaching an age where they are thinking about leaving school for apprenticeships, or starting courses in Further or Higher Education. It all fitted perfectly to showcase what FVC had to offer and wish Scotland well in the USA this summer. To be able to do it along to Dead Man Fall’s excellent Bang Your Drum song, with Des on lead vocals, was the perfect fit. My son Andrew loved getting involved in the film and linking up with Daniel to put their skills to the test around the College. We all hope it brings a smile and a positive message to our current and future students and maybe helps to inspire them in their studies and Scotland at the World Cup.”

Des added: “Stuart has been banging on about making a film like this for years and using the song, and he finally wore me down when Scotland made it to the World Cup this year. I spoke with my bandmates and they all agreed the ‘Bang Your Drum’ would work well with the idea for the film. My son Daniel really enjoyed spending half a day at the Falkirk Campus during the Easter holidays to shoot the film and he also got a better idea of the range of courses and facilities that we offer here at the College. So I am hoping it has inspired him as well for what he wants to do for a career, as well as getting the chance to show off his fitba skills!”

Ethan McEwan, Communications & Marketing Administration Assistant, said: “It was great to finally bring Stuart’s idea to life after what seemed like a decade! Having produced and appeared in the last Christmas advert, I was focused on supporting the production this time and working behind the camera.

“Filming across the College during the Easter holidays with Daniel and Andrew was brilliant fun, with a lot of energy on set and some proper laugh out loud moments along the way. I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into more video projects like this in the future.”
