Six of the best are off to Babcock

Wednesday 2nd September 2026

A group of six Fabrication and Welding students who recently completed and Energy Skills Partnership (ESP) funded engineering course, have been taken on as Modern Apprentices by Babcock.

Students who completed the NC Fabrication and Welding and the Access to Engineering course, gathered recently at the FVC Falkirk Campus to receive recognition for their hard work during the year. This year, both groups benefitted from extra funding awarded through the ESP Scottish Government Offshore Wind Project, designed to recruit and deliver additional training and qualifications to support the offshore wind sector and its supply chain, whilst upskilling college staff and students to help address skills shortages in the industry.

The funding also enabled the NC Fabrication and Welding and Access to Engineering courses to be enhanced through the addition of Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) units, further enhancing the learners’ practical skills and employability.

Six of those NC Fabrication and Welding students have now been snapped up to work for one of the major engineering firms in the UK.

They are: Joshua Gaunt, Euan Campbell, Conor Stewart, Layton Stevenson, Micah Blue and Lewis Seal, all pictured here.

Des McCabe, FVC Curriculum Manager in the Department of STEM and Construction, said: “To see the progression in the six of them from interviewing them for the full-time course last year, to now seeing them progressing onto an extremely sought after apprenticeship has been really rewarding. They have all worked hard to achieve both their NC and PEO qualifications in one year as full time learners, and I’m delighted to see them moving into an exciting career in the Fabrication and Welding industry.”
