Multi-Vehicle Driving Simulation Suite Set to Upskill the Next Generation of Operators

Forth Valley College has unveiled a pioneering Multi-Vehicle Driving Simulation Suite within its new Skills Transition Centre (STC), providing learners with access to one of the most advanced immersive training environments of its kind in Scotland.

Developed in partnership with Swedish simulation specialists Tenstar, whose slogan is “Prepare for Reality”, the facility combines cutting-edge simulation technology, virtual reality and collaborative learning to help prepare future operators for careers across the construction, agriculture, and forestry sectors.

The new suite features 14 different vehicle simulations, including construction machinery, agricultural equipment and forestry vehicles, delivered through four state-of-the-art simulators comprising two large-motion simulator units and two desktop simulators. The facility also includes VR headsets, a VR Lecturer Avatar station and a large LED display wall which can showcase up to five simulator and virtual reality views simultaneously, creating a highly immersive and engaging training environment.

Learners can experience realistic vehicle operation before progressing to real-world machinery, building confidence, competence and awareness in a safe and controlled environment.

“This innovative facility allows learners to develop practical skills and experience realistic workplace scenarios without the costs, risks or environmental impact associated with operating real vehicles and plant machinery.

“Using Tenstar’s industry-leading simulation technology, learners can train in everything from construction and agricultural machinery to transport vehicles, helping them gain confidence and develop their skills before moving on to live equipment.

“The simulators are already supporting a range of learners at Forth Valley College including Modern Apprentices, young job seekers, class one traffic management students, and school pupils exploring future career options. As we continue to develop the facility, we will also be working closely with industry partners to support workforce development and commercial training opportunities.”

One of the most unique features of the suite is its Multi Machine Environment which allows multiple learners to work together within the same virtual construction site in real time. Four operators can simultaneously take control of different machines, such as an excavator, wheel loader, articulated dumper truck and dozer, while an instructor enters the environment virtually through a VR headset as an interactive lecturer avatar.

This enables learners to undertake collaborative construction projects, communicate with colleagues, allocate tasks and respond to live challenges, closely replicating the demands of a real construction site. Rather than simply learning vehicle controls, participants must assess site conditions, plan work sequences, manage risks and respond to unexpected events.

The approach helps develop not only technical competence but also the vital employability skills sought by employers, including teamwork, leadership, communication, problem solving and decision-making.

The facility also incorporates virtual reality technology that allows learners to step out of a vehicle and into their working environment. For example, a forklift operator can leave the cab in the virtual world, walk around a warehouse, inspect equipment and carry out pre-use safety checks as they would in a real workplace.

The benefits of simulation-based learning are significant. Learners can practise routine and high-risk situations without risk of injury or vehicle damage, while organisations can reduce fuel consumption, equipment wear and maintenance costs. Training can take place regardless of weather conditions, daylight hours or equipment availability, providing more opportunities for practical learning and skills development.

Sophisticated reporting tools enable instructors to monitor learner progress, analyse performance and provide targeted feedback through detailed reports, scoring systems and replay functionality. The technology also supports a more inclusive learning experience through features such as text-to-speech and self-paced learning pathways, helping make training accessible to a wider range of learners.

The Multi-Vehicle Driving Simulation Suite forms part of the College's £4 million Skills Transition Centre, funded through the Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal – a transformative partnership involving the UK Government, Scottish Government, Falkirk Council and regional partners.

The STC has been established to support Scotland’s Just Transition by helping individuals develop the skills required for sustainable employment opportunities in lower-carbon industries and emerging sectors.

The simulation equipment has been supplied by Tenstar, with the screen solution provided by Absen LED Company. GVAV provided the visual technology and AV installation. The collaboration has brought together industry-leading expertise to create a unique learning facility that combines immersive technology, sustainability and workforce development in a way rarely seen within further education.

As workforce needs continue to evolve, the College believes the new simulation suite will play an important role in preparing future generations of operators, helping them develop the technical skills, confidence and industry awareness needed to succeed in the modern workplace.
