Two Forth Valley College CompEx trainers have been recognised for their significant contribution to the sector’s latest updated industry standard reference book.
Falkirk Campus based Danni Wiseman FVC’s CompEx Centre Manager and Stuart Paterson, a Commercial Trainer (Mechanical Engineering), have played a key role in the update of the globally significant EEMUA Publication 186 and supporting EEMUA 214 guidance. They have made significant contributions to the latest edition of the guidance, and both will be formally credited as authors.
EEMUA 186, A Practitioner’s Handbook for Potentially Explosive Atmospheres, is widely used across the UK, Europe and internationally as a core reference for engineers and technicians working in hazardous areas. As part of this update, CompEx commissioned Forth Valley College to provide specialist input, recognising the expertise within the College’s team.
Stuart led the complete rewrite of the mechanical section, bringing it in line with the latest non-electrical standards, including ISO 80079-36 and ISO 80079-37 and Danni worked alongside the Technical Authority CompEx and EEMUA consultant, to support the wider review, update and validation of the publication, ensuring it reflects current best practice across industry.
Their work directly influences how hazardous area safety is applied in sectors such as oil and gas, petrochemical, and wider industrial environments - ensuring engineers and technicians are working to the highest standards.
Following completion of the updates, Danni and Stuart delivered a webinar to EEMUA members, presenting key changes and engaging with industry professionals.
Danni provided an overview of the full publication update and led a Q&A session and Stuart delivered a technical presentation titled: ‘The other ‘half’ of Ex safety: non-electrical equipment, assessment, inspection, and flange integrity’. His session covered: Improvements in non-electrical equipment standards; Ignition hazard assessments; Flange management and joint integrity; and Updated inspection approaches and guidance. This engagement has further reinforced Forth Valley College’s position as a leading authority in hazardous area training and consultancy.
Danni, who brings over 25 years’ experience working within explosive atmospheres, trains and assesses across the full CompEx suite and was the first female worldwide to become a CompEx trainer, said: “Being invited to help create a new EEMUA 186 and Toolbox Guide is more than recognition of your expertise, it’s an opportunity to turn experience into a lasting legacy that will make work safer and better for those that follow.
“The fact that two people from the same CompEx centre have been chosen to be involved in this project, speaks volumes about how well regarded we are as a training provider. I am extremely proud of the team we have built here at FVC.”
Stuart, who has a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Chartered Engineer with the IMechE, said: “It has been great to get involved in the development of the guidance for mechanical equipment, as it provides clearer details for practitioners and now gives more emphasis for this in a hazardous area. By developing the guidance, I hope this demonstrates the enthusiasm and knowledge for this subject here at FVC that we can then pass on to candidates.”
