Level 5 Hospitality Operations students from Forth Valley College were treated to an exclusive, industry-led Front of House Masterclass at the prestigious Prestonfield House Hotel on Tuesday 6 October 2026.
Hosted by the Master Chefs of Great Britain (MCGB) at the hotel’s historic Stables venue, the immersive day-long event connected the next generation of hospitality talent with some of the UK’s leading culinary and service experts.
The intensive masterclass aimed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and elite industry practice, and following a formal opening by George McIvor OBE, Chairman of the MCGB, the Forth Valley College students engaged in a series of advanced workshops covering luxury product knowledge, modern sustainability, and precision table service.
The morning sessions offered informative sessions on topics such as sustainability and industry trends. Highlighting the evolving demands of modern diners, Mo Mands of Gleneagles Hotel and Elliot Hill of Gleneagles Townhouse, delivered an insightful session on running a sustainable restaurant in today's eco-conscious market. Chef Elliot demonstrated a stunning plate of seasonal Red Deer Venison with girolles, Skirlie, brambles & port wine reduction whilst the front of house made a bramble whisky sour to compliment the dish.
A major highlight of the day was an interactive lunchtime workshop led by David Bell, Culinary Director of Buzzworks. Students gained firsthand insight into working across diverse restaurant brands and observed live cooking demonstrations featuring food from the group's four main brands. Meeting a highly progressive employer like Buzzworks allowed students to visualize diverse career pathways and understand the passion and dedication required to work for multi-concept hospitality groups.
Arnelle Hall, Hospitality Lecturer at Forth Valley College, said: "This masterclass provided our students with a unique insight into elite hospitality operations. Seeing the standards expected at this level is incredibly motivating as they prepare for their future careers."
Carolyn Taylor, Hospitality Lecturer, who also accompanied the group, added: “Taking our front of house students to the Front of House Masterclass was an invaluable experience. For many, it was their first opportunity to see the hospitality industry in action beyond the classroom and Gallery Restaurant. Throughout the day, students explored different styles of service, learned about food and drink pairings and how these can enhance a guest's dining experience and also had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals.”
The afternoon concluded with elevated technical training, featuring a luxury product knowledge showcase on Sturia Caviar by Clare MacDougal, followed by a masterclass in elite table service standards led by Gleneagles' Caitlin Findlay who demonstrated carving a whole side of salmon table side.
By stepping out of the classroom and into a five-star environment, the Level 5 students walked away with critical skills development in fine-dining mechanics, up-to-date knowledge on sustainable operations, and fresh inspiration for their future careers. Experiencing the sheer precision required by world-class venues like Prestonfield House and Gleneagles, provided these aspiring professionals with invaluable real-world benchmarks as they prepare to enter the industry
