Football did the talking at a recent seven-a-side tournament for Forth Valley College English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) For Life students recently.
The squad – coached and managed by Dean McKirdy FVC’s Active Campus Coordinator – travelled to the World of Football in Edinburgh on Thursday 23 April to attend an ESOL football tournament hosted by Edinburgh College.
A total of eight colleges took part which meant there were two groups of four teams and FVC were up against Glasgow Kelvin College, Edinburgh College, and Dundee & Angus College - the tournament's eventual winners.
The FVC squad struggled in the first group stage, but rose to the occasion in the second group stage to win the Plate competition.
Dean, said: “After a disappointing group stage, we found ourselves eliminated from the main trophy, however, we then took part in the shield competition. After an enjoyable lunch break that saw some of our ESOL students taking centre stage to show off their dance moves, the team were rejuvenated for the afternoon games.
“After seeing off Glasgow Clyde College 1-0 in the Plate semi-final, we then beat Edinburgh College - who had previously beat us in the group stage, 2-1. That saw FVC crowned the Plate champions!
“Awards did not stop there as our player Shazyar Rasouli – pictured - picked up the goal of the tournament award for this strike in the Plate semi-final! Overall, the class had a very enjoyable day out taking part in football and mixing with the ESOL classes of all the other colleges. We are looking forward to next year’s tournament already!”
