Representatives of the upcoming Scotland wide ‘Wee Read’ event visited Forth Valley College’s Stirling Campus Learning resource Centre (LRC) on Tuesday 29 September, to encourage staff and students to take part.
The ‘Wee Read’ event organised for Wednesday 7 October, has been organised by the Scottish Library Information Council (SLIC) to help celebrate National Year of Reading 2026, and the Stirling Campus LRC was the perfect place to encourage and inspire people to pledge their support for reading on the day. ‘Wee Read’ is Scotland’s national celebration of reading - a simple invitation for everyone to stop, take a few minutes, and enjoy the pleasure of reading. Whether it’s a novel, comic, magazine, newspaper, audiobook, poem, or recipe, every kind of reading counts.
On Wednesday 7 October 2026, people across Scotland will come together for one shared moment to celebrate the joy of reading and the positive difference it can make to wellbeing, learning and everyday lives.
Libraries throughout Scotland are the perfect place to start the reading journey and part of their goal is to encourage more people into libraries – inspiring everyone to read regularly for pleasure.
By taking part, those taking part in the event will be joining thousands of people across Scotland - from schools, libraries and workplaces to community groups, families and individuals - to help create a country where reading is valued, shared and enjoyed by all.
Ahead of the reading moment on Wednesday 7 October, people across the country are being encouraged to make one simple pledge: to read. That could mean setting aside five minutes or fifty, discovering a new author or genre, revisiting an old favourite or sharing a story with someone else. Whether it's a few pages or a whole book, a comic, magazine, newspaper, recipe or poem, every read counts.
Lisa MacLaren, FVC Learning Services Manager, said: “As part of Scotland’s National Year of Reading 2026, I am delighted to have pledged my support for The Wee Read and would encourage everyone to take part on 7 October. Reading is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to learn, connect and be inspired, and it does not have to mean picking up a novel. Whether you enjoy reading books, newspaper articles, blogs, recipes, or online content, every type of reading helps develop confidence, curiosity and understanding.
“At Forth Valley College, we are passionate about promoting literacy and fostering a lifelong love of reading among our students, staff and wider communities. We were delighted to welcome representatives from The Wee Read to the College on 29 September as part of their national campaign, and we are proud to support this important initiative during the National Year of Reading. I encourage everyone to set aside some time on Wednesday 7 October, choose something they enjoy reading, and join people across Scotland in celebrating the joy and benefits of reading.”
Alison Nolan, chief executive of the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), said: “Wee Read is a simple invitation to everyone in Scotland to discover – or rediscover – the joy of reading. There is no right or wrong way to take part and every read counts, whether that's a few minutes with a favourite magazine, sharing a story with a child or getting lost in a great book. With a target of 50,000 pledges we hope people of all ages and interests will get involved, visit their local library and join Scotland for a Wee read on Wednesday 7 October."
