Hospitality, Professional Cookery and Patisserie students learned some of the basics of wine tasting recently, when the Gallery Restaurant’s wine supplier ran a special workshop.

Felix Wood Account Manager and part owner of WoodWinters Wines & Whiskies, was happy to give the students an introduction to wine tasting, in the Gallery on Tuesday 29 September and students from the Hospitality Operations Level 5, HND Patisserie, and HND Professional Cookery all attended.

Michal Tomaszewski, Hospitality Lecturer, said: “The tasting provided students with valuable industry knowledge, helping them develop a deeper understanding of wine styles, grape varieties, food and wine pairing principles, and the role wine plays within the hospitality sector. Through guided tasting and discussion, students gained insight into how sensory evaluation techniques are used to assess quality, flavour profiles and customer preferences.

“For the Level 5 Hospitality Management students, the session enhanced their understanding of beverage service, customer experience and sales opportunities within restaurants, hotels and events. Students were able to explore how wine knowledge can support effective menu planning and improve guest satisfaction.

“The experience was equally valuable for HND Patisserie and HND Professional Cookery students, allowing them to consider how wines complement different dishes and desserts. Understanding these pairings is an important skill for future chefs and hospitality professionals, helping them create well-balanced dining experiences and work more effectively with front-of-house teams.

“Felix Wood from WoodWinters Wines & Whiskies shared his expertise and provided students with a real world learning experience that bridged classroom theory and current industry practice. The session offered practical insights that will support students in their future careers across the hospitality and food sectors

“I want to say thank you to Felix from WoodWintersfor running the wine tasting for us. It was amazing that you were able to teach our hospitality students about wine early on in their course. It adds to their experiences and shows them the importance of wine in the industry.

“Thanks to Felix and WoodWinters for your support, and hopefully we will do it again next year.”
