This self-paced online course introduces you to the foundations of sport, exercise, and human performance. It’s designed to give you the underpinning theory you’ll need whether you’re preparing for further study, already training in sport and fitness, or just interested in how the body works during exercise.
With a clear focus on flexibility and accessibility, the course lets you study at your own pace and revisit key concepts whenever you need. It’s suitable for learners building confidence at SCQF Level 5 and provides a strong knowledge base for future progression.
Applicants for this course must reside in Scotland.

Part 1 – Fitness Foundations

- Module 4: Training Methods – Examine methods such as aerobic, speed, flexibility, circuit training, and the use of free weights.
- Module 5: Fitness in Action – Apply your learning to sport and exercise examples, with interactive case studies.
- Module 6: Consolidation and Revision – Review and reinforce your knowledge with dedicated revision sessions.
Part 2 – Body Systems and Energy
Gain an understanding of how the body works and adapts to exercise.
- Module 1: The Skeletal System – Study bones, joints, and movement in sport.
- Module 2: The Muscular System – Explore muscle structure, function, fibres, and adaptations.
- Module 3: The Cardiovascular System – Learn about the heart, blood flow, and cardiovascular responses to exercise.
