During the HNC Year students study the fundamental principles of chemical engineering and chemistry and will also get the chance to develop practical skills. Upon completion of the HNC students transfer to year two of BEng Chemical Engineering at Strathclyde University.

In Years two and three topics include Material and Energy Balances, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer and Fluid Flow. Engineering practice and chemical engineering laboratory work are also introduced along with finance and business studies. The principles taught in Years two and three are applied to the most important unit operations used in the chemical and process industries, including distillation, gas absorption and adsorption, evaporation, crystallisation, filtration and drying. Reactor design, biochemical engineering and food processes are also covered. Laboratory work continues and you will carry out two small Chemical Engineering design projects to apply your growing knowledge to a practical problem.

In Year four students carry out an individual research project and submit a thesis.

  • Chemical Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Process Engineer
  • Materials Engineer
  • Nuclear Engineer
  • Petroleum Engineer

One of the following:

  • Three Highers at Grade B or equivalent AND one Higher at Grade C or equivalent (B grades must include Mathematics & Chemistry)

  • The Engineering Academy may make a contextualised offer in accordance with the University’s Widening Access policy; entry would require 4 Highers at BBCC (B grades must include Mathematics & Chemistry)

  • Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering or Scientific Technologies AND three further Highers at BBC to include Mathematics & Chemistry at B.

If you have any questions about entry requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact engineering-academy@strath.ac.uk
