Criminology - Online
This flexible, self-study Criminology course provides an engaging introduction to the key concepts, systems and processes that shape crime, justice and society. Designed for a wide range of learners, it can be studied as a stand-alone introduction for those new to the subject, used alongside a full-time programme to reinforce classroom learning, or completed as a refresher for individuals wishing to update their knowledge.
Learners can progress through the course at their own pace using interactive online materials, with approximately 45 minutes recommended for each module. Upon successful completion of all course sections, learners will receive a Forth Valley College Certificate of Completion.
Applicants for this course must reside in Scotland.
Content
The course is structured around eight engaging units delivered through interactive packages, microlearning activities and video explainers.
- Introduction to Crime and Criminality - what crime is and how it is defined across different societies
- Theories of Criminality - the key perspectives used to explain criminal behaviour
- Crime Statistics, Social Patterns and Change - understanding crime trends and the social factors that influence offending
- Law Making and Social Control - how laws are created and enforced within society
- The Criminal Justice System - structure, key agencies and decision-making processes
- Criminal Investigations: Evidence, Forensics and Personnel - investigative techniques, evidence gathering and forensic science
- Media, Crime and Public Perception - how crime is reported and represented, and how this can influence public attitudes and policy
- Campaigns for Change - how social movements, public campaigns and advocacy can influence legislation and bring about meaningful change in law and society
Throughout the programme, learners engage with real-world examples and knowledge-check activities designed to reinforce learning and develop a broader understanding of crime, justice and contemporary social issues.
