Higher Childcare & Development (Schools)
***PLEASE NOTE - only pupils who will be at school during session 2026/27 can apply for this course***
Preferably S6 pupils, however applications from S5 pupils who meet the entry criteria will be considered.

Higher Childcare and Development is designed for you.
This course is perfect for anyone who:
- Has an interest in working with children and young people
- Is considering a career in teaching
- Wants to become an Early Years Practitioner
- Is planning to progress into childcare, education, health or social care
You’ll explore how children develop, what influences their wellbeing, and how professionals support them to flourish. Through engaging lessons, real-life case studies and your own research project, you’ll build the knowledge and skills that form the foundation of a rewarding, people-focused career.
Whether you’re thinking about working in early years, primary schools, health or social care, this course gives you the tools to make a positive impact.
How the course is assessed
The course will be assessed through both a project-based assessment and an external SQA exam.
Attendance
This course will run on Tuesday & Thursday 1.35pm - 3.25pm
(Please note that this course continues throughout periods of study leave from school and it is very important that pupils attend during these periods, except on exam days).
There is no work placement on this course and therefore no requirement to complete a PVG disclosure check.
Content
You’ll explore three areas:
Child Development
- Learn about physical, cognitive, emotional, language and social development and what helps children thrive.
Child Development: Theory
- Study the thinkers who shaped what we know about children today, such as Piaget, Vygotsky, Bowlby, Bruner and more.
Services for Children and Young People
- Discover the range of support available to children and families, including education, health, social services and community organisations.
You’ll also complete an independent research project, building confidence in investigation, analysis and academic writing - great preparation for future study or employment.

Progression
After completing Higher Childcare and Development, you can progress to:
- HNC Childhood Practice is available for learners who successfully complete Higher Childcare and Development at Grade C or above, achieve Higher English at grade C or above, and demonstrate consistent positive engagement and conduct throughout the course.
- Modern Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children & Young People)
- Further study at college or university, such as degrees in Childhood Practice, Education, Social Work, Psychology or Health
Entry requirements
- Applicants must be attending secondary school
- Applicants must either be working towards Higher English or have achieved Higher English at Grade C or above
- S6 pupils should have at least 3 national 5s including English at Grade C or above and 2 Highers from S5 at grade C or above
- S5 pupils should have at least 3 national 5s including English at Grade C or above and be working towards 2 additional Highers
- Applicants with NPA Social Services Children and Young People will be considered with lecturer reference and dependent upon additional qualifications
