Foundation Apprenticeship in Business Skills (Schools) - 1 Year Option

Please note that only secondary school pupils staying on at school and who will be starting S5/S6 in August 2022 are eligible to apply for this course.

This Foundation Apprenticeship is a great way to get hands-on experience and gain a qualification at the same level as a Higher. Pupils will have the unique chance to develop skills and knowledge across a range of business topics, both in the classroom and alongside the experience of a valuable work placement with an employer.

What qualifications will pupils achieve?

On successful completion, pupils will achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Business Skills at SCQF Level 6 (the same level as a Higher), which includes:

  • A National Progression Award in Business with Information Technology at SCQF Level 6 (6 units)
  • Four work-based units from the SVQ3 in Business and Administration (SCQF Level 6)

Attendance

Pupils will attend Forth Valley College or a local secondary school for six hours per week all year. There will also be a work placement for one day a week throughout the year and a lecturer from the College will visit them regularly to assess their competency of the work-based units.

(Please note that this course continues throughout periods of study leave from school and it is very important that pupils attend during these periods, except on exam days).

All travel to College and work placements is funded.

  • Pupils will probably be working towards achieving one or two Highers over S5 and S6 and their school will need to confirm that they are ready to study at Higher level
  • Pupils need to be reasonably confident in Maths and English, so we expect them to be able to achieve at least a grade C pass in both of these subjects at National 5, by the end of S5
  • Pupils taking a National 5 in Business Management in S5 and who are looking to start a career in the world of business, or a related field

  • Employment
  • Modern Apprenticeship - accelerated progression as a pupil completing the FA in Business Skills will have achieved a large proportion of the requirements for a Modern Apprenticeship in Business Admin Level 3

  • When starting the FA, pupils should have achieved 2 NAT 5's in relevant subjects, such as English, Maths, Business Studies etc, and should working towards achieving one or two Highers over S5 and S6 and the school will need to confirm that you are ready to study at Higher level
  • Pupils need to be reasonably confident in the use of Word Processing & Spreadsheets as the IT units within the framework are complex and will include creating and formatting complex spreasheets, using formulas and functions
  • Given that the student will be studying Nat 5’s/Highers in addition to attending college to complete the FA, please confirm that the the student is able to juggle the demands of both college and school
  • Taking a National 5 in Business Management in S5 will also be an advantage
