Foundation Apprenticeship in Accountancy - (Schools) 2 Year Option

Please note that only secondary school pupils staying on at school and who will be starting S5 in August 2020 are eligible to apply for this course.

If you are thinking about Accountancy as your future career, the Foundation Apprenticeship is a great way to get hands-on experience in the industry and also gain an Accountancy qualification at the same level as a Higher. You will have the unique chance to develop skills and knowledge across a range of accountancy topics, both in a classroom and alongside a valuable work placement with an employer.

What qualifications will I gain?

You will achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Accountancy at SCQF Level 6 (the same level as Highers), which includes:

  • National Progression Award in Accountancy at SCQF level 6 (5 units)
  • 3 SVQ work based units: completion of these 3 units will also enable the learner to be awarded the Association of Accounting
  • Technicians (AAT) level 3 Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping (SCQF Level 6)
  • An SQA Work Placement unit

Attendance

Year 1

You will attend the Falkirk Campus on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons all year. (Please note that this course continues throughout periods of study leave from school and it is very important that you attend during these periods, except on your exam days).

Year 2

You will attend a work placement for one day a week throughout the year (specific day to be confirmed) and a lecturer from the college will visit you regularly to assess your competence for the work-based units.

Your travel to College and work placements is funded.

  • Gain accelerated entry onto a Modern Apprenticeship in Accounting (the work based units you achieve will count towards the Modern Apprenticeship qualification).
  • Come to college to study the HNC/D Accounting (or another related HNC/D)
  • Students who successfully complete the Foundation Apprenticeship in Accountancy with a positive reference and attendance of over 90% will be guaranteed a place on HND Accounting at Forth Valley College
  • Go straight into a job with an accountancy employer or in a related industry, such as business and finance
  • Use the Foundation Apprenticeship alongside Highers to apply to university

  • Pupils should be working towards achieving one or two Highers over S5 and S6 and your school will need to confirm that you are ready to study at Higher level
  • Pupils need to be reasonably confident in Maths and English, so we expect you to be able to achieve at least a C pass in both of these subjects at National 5 while you are in S5
  • Taking a National 5 in Business Management in S5 will also be an advantage

Applications for Foundation Apprenticeships will go live in January 2018.  Please contact your pupil support teacher in school to discuss your options.
