Foundation Apprenticeship in Accountancy (Schools) - 1 Year Option

Please note that only secondary school pupils staying on at school and who will be starting S5/S6 in August 2020 are eligible to apply for this course.

This Foundation Apprenticeship is a great way to get hands-on experience in the industry and also gain an accountancy qualification at the same level as a Higher. Pupils will have the unique chance to develop skills and knowledge across a range of accountancy topics, both in the classroom and alongside the experience of a valuable work placement with an employer.

What qualifications will pupils achieve?

On successful completion, pupils will achieve a Foundation Apprenticeship (Group Award) in Accountancy at SCQF Level 6 (the same level as a Higher), which includes:

• National Progression Award in Accountancy at SCQF Level 6 (5 units)
• An SQA Work Placement unit
• Three units will also enable the pupils to be awarded the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping (SCQF Level 6)

AAT qualifications are recognised by employers as practical and technical qualifications that prepare students for the world of work and for working specifically in accountancy and finance roles.

Attendance

For two years, pupils will attend Forth Valley College or a local secondary school for the equivalent of one day a week. Pupils will also undertake a period of work placement for 6 weeks during their 2nd year to help them contextualise the learning they have gained in the classroom to real life scenarios.

(Please note that this course continues throughout periods of study leave from school and it is very important that pupils attend during these periods, except on exam days).

All travel to College and work placements is funded.

• Possible accelerated entry onto a Modern Apprenticeship in Accounting (the work based units achieved will count towards the Modern Apprenticeship qualification)
• Higher level study at college on HND Accounting or Business
• Progressing straight into a job with an accountancy employer or in a related industry, such as business and finance
• Using the Foundation Apprenticeship alongside Highers to apply to university

• Pupils will probably be working towards achieving one or two Highers over S5 and S6 and their school will need to confirm that they are ready to study at Higher level
• Pupils need to be reasonably confident in Maths and English, so we expect them to be able to achieve at least a C pass in both of these subjects at National 5, while they are in S5
• Pupils taking a National 5 in Business Management in S5 and who are looking to start a career in the world of business, finance or related field
