Chloe Baird (30) from Falkirk graduated with a HND Applied Biological Sciences and also won Forth Valley College’s Most Promising Student in STEM and Construction for 2025.

She, said: “I was extremely shocked and proud to win the award. This means a great deal to me as it shows that no matter your age, background, or anything else, if you put your mind to something, you can achieve it.

“I chose to study at Forth Valley College because my first experience here was incredibly positive. I attended the College straight out of school when I was just 16 years old back in 2012, and from the very beginning, I felt welcome and comfortable. The supportive environment really stood out to me as it felt like everyone was there to help me succeed on my journey. That sense of community made a lasting impression on me and influenced my decision to return at an age when I was more aware of what I wanted to pursue and what I really enjoyed.

“Having studied in both the old College and the new building, I can confidently say that the facilities have greatly improved. The College offers everything you need to successfully complete your course and gain practical skills that other higher education institutions might lack. The lecturers are the backbone of this place, and without them and the science technicians, I would not have been able to achieve what I have. The level of support they provide is exceptional, and I am eternally grateful to them.

“My experience at College has benefited me in many ways. Of course, academically, being a main benefit. It's given me a solid base of knowledge that I can build on in University. This has been gained through a variety of lectures, practical classes and trips outwith the College. It has also given me confidence in myself and allowed me to try new things, such as volunteering with the STEM club.

“Without the support of the College staff, I would not have achieved the grades needed for university, but with their support and backing me all the way, it ha allowed me a direct entry to Year 3.

“Within the STEM and Construction department, the facilities are second to none. The hands-on experience through many practical sessions helps equip you for jobs or further study. As previously said, the support and kindness shown by all within the College is outstanding. There is always someone able to help you, whether that be your personal lecturers or those within the Learning Resource Centre (LRC).

“Overall, the journey has been wonderful. Although there have been stressful moments, having supportive people - lecturers, staff and classmates around me has helped me get through them. The reassurance that I can succeed, even though it may seem simple, is incredibly helpful and definitely pushed me through and allowed me to enjoy it all. But if I had to pick anything, it would be the animal handling sessions where I fell in love with some beautiful animals, including a bearded dragon, a hognose snake and a Chilean Rose Tarantula named Luci.

“I believe it's a great place for personal growth as well as academic development. It can lead to many career opportunities. The staff are extremely supportive, understanding and knowledgeable. There are also great facilities and clubs that you can make use of, for example, the gym and sports halls are open throughout lunch-times for all students to keep active and reduce stress levels.”
