Lifestart students took a bow for their excellent efforts recently, as they were presented with certificates and an award to mark their achievements.
Top author and friend of the College Chris McQueer was delighted to come in to present the group with their ‘Time To Shine’ certificates after they won ‘Event Of The Year’ at the recent FVC Student Awards held in the Falkirk Campus.
Lucy Hawkins, FVC Curriculum Manager in the Department of Business and Communities, who picked up the FVSA award on the students’ behalf on Thursday 26 May, said: “The project was originally entered into the SQA ‘Time to Shine’ exhibition which is scheduled for some time this year. The inspiration came from the students’ Life in Another Country unit, looking at the bright colours, birdlife and architecture of Italy.
“After discussions with their Art and Woodwork lecturers, they came up with an idea to create bright colourful bird boxes that would allow them to use their artistic and woodworking skills
“They researched bird box designs and ideas around sustainability and wildlife protection, before starting to create their individual boxes. After discussions with their Art teacher, they looked at colour palettes, combinations and colour theory to decide which colours they should use to paint them, that would work individually and collectively.
“Finally they wanted a way to display and photograph their work for the ‘Time to Shine’ awards and enlisted the help of the Workstart students to help design and create a display unit.
“The Lifestart students were very happy with what the Workstart group came up with, and were delighted when the FVC judges liked the finished results and could see their interpretation of the lovely bright houses and birdlife of Italy.
“One of the students asked me, ‘Is this a big achievement?’ and my answer was ‘Indeed it is!’”
“Well done to all the Lifestart, Workstart students and staff - Gordon Bruce, Jane Patterson, Linda Gilgannon and Katie White – who were all involved in bringing this project together.”
