Forth Valley College and its Student Association were asked to take part in the National Holocaust Memorial Day at Falkirk Town Hall on Wednesday 27 January.
The College’s Equalities Department had previously asked students and staff from the ESOL course in the Department of Access and Progression to make some artwork in the form of folded paper books which were on display.
The Student Association also teamed up with a Skills for Work: Creative Industries School Provision group to create an installation piece which featured a display of etchings, favourite items from the students and mixed media cushions. Additionally a pre-recorded interview was played as part of the installation which featured the Student President Lorraine Simpson talking about the project and FVC Chemical Engineering lecturer Dr Manhal Alnasser speaking about his life and family in civil-war torn Syria.
The theme of the event was ‘Don’t Stand By’, this gave our students lots of scope for discussion around themes such as bullying, domestic violence, the current refugee crisis and the holocaust itself. All in all the project was a very thought provoking experience.
