Forth Valley College’s Senior Management Team undertook Corporate Parenting Training this week (Tuesday 19 January).
The training provided by Who Cares? Scotland is designed to offer an insight into what life is like for those in care and the impact of their experiences.
Who Cares? Scotland is a voluntary organisation that works directly with this vulnerable group to offer them representation and support.
Forth Valley College made a commitment to increase support for Scotland’s young people and children with experience of the care system last year by signing Who Cares? Scotland’s Corporate Parent Pledge.
Since then the College has been working closely with Who Cares? Scotland to increase their understanding of the types of support Looked After Children and Young People may need to achieve success when undertaking courses and training.
Several other members of staff have already completed the training undertaken by the Senior Management Team this week and Forth Valley College will also be the first college in Scotland to pilot an online course designed by Who Cares? Scotland. This will be completed by all staff members in future training.
Dr Ken Thomson, Principal of Forth Valley College said:
“The training offered a fascinating insight into the obstacles that can face young people and children who have experience of the care system and importantly, highlighted ways in which we can do more to support them.
“Whilst we are already very proud of the support on offer to all our learners, the training has inspired some new ideas and strengthened our commitment to looked after children and young people. This will be a key focus for the college going forward and we look forward to rolling out training to all staff within the organisation. We want to really make a difference as a corporate parent, because we can!”
