Forth Valley College students with a story to tell, are being challenged to produce a script which will be turned into a 90 second film by their peers from the Creative Industries Department.
Open to all students across the College from Higher English evening course learners to trainee Joiners, Engineers, Hairdresser or Scientists, the brief requires those entering to write a screenplay of one and a half minutes, with two characters in one single location.
The exciting concept has been created by the Creative Industries Department as a result of the success of last year’s #NoStigma film produced by Forth Valley College Media students, which was commissioned by the Grangemouth Contractors Safety Alliance (GCSA) and was highly commended at 2019s Safety Group UK (SGUK) awards.
Media students from FVC made the film to help raise awareness of mental illness and reduce accidents at the Grangemouth refinery. It entrusted a team of FVC students with directing, producing, scripting, casting, filming and editing the short film. Titled ‘#NoStigma’ the film highlighted the need for openness in discussing and addressing mental health issues in the workplace and was shot over two days in November 2018. Professional TV Director/Producer Craig Collinson also agreed to mentor and advise the student team involved throughout the creative filming process.

The winning writers from this competition will have the option to direct their work or nominate a director of their choosing. Crew will be made up of FVC staff and students. Completed scripts should be e-mailed to fiona.milliganrennie@forthvalley.ac.uk by 31 July 2020.
Three scripts will be chosen to be made into short films with support from the Forth Valley College media team and media students.
Creative Industries Curriculum Manager, Fi Milligan-Rennie, said: “Our media students produce scripts as part of their studies every year and we believe that taking these skills an applying them in a competitive context, will give students a sense of screenwriting as a profession.
“We are creating an opportunity for our emerging scriptwriters to have a platform for their work, while giving new and returning students the experience of an industry standard film shoot from first read through to screening. It’s incredibly exciting.
“The idea was inspired by our experience of making #NoStigma, which was intensively filmed over two days and of huge benefit for our media students both in terms of gaining industry experience and completing aspects of their coursework.”
The competition is open to all Forth Valley College students and the closing date for entries is 4pm Friday 31 July 2020. Judges decision is final. By entering this competition you consent to your work being produced in a teaching context
Director privileges are dependent on writers' availability of time of production (September 2020).
