Mechanical Engineering Foundation Apprentices (FAs) were treated to a tour of the Forth Ports Authority site in Grangemouth recently (Thursday 21 December 2017).
FVC’s Applied Science, Maths and Mechanical Engineering (ASMME) Department Curriculum Manager Dougie Ross and lecturer Alan Lockhart accompanied the fifth and sixth year pupils from Denny High, Lornshill Academy, Bo’ness Academy, Falkirk High, Graeme High School and Larbert High.
Forth Ports Authority Apprentice Training Manager Nick Henderson started off by giving the students a presentation on how to apply for a Modern Apprenticeship (MA). They then witnessed a carrier boat being unloaded and shown the fork trucks and low level cranes that were in for repair. They were given a team working exercise, where they had to build a unistrut metal frame to hold electrical Isolators.
The Mechanical Engineering FA is a two year course where senior school pupils attend the FVC Falkirk Campus on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. On completion they will achieve an NC Engineering Systems (level 6 and 5) Performing Engineering Operations units and working towards a Modern Apprenticeship.
