Evening class lecturer Katie White helped Lifestart students celebrate Deaf Awareness Week (Monday 2-Sunday 8 May) by signing a song on social media.
She chose T.H.I.S.T.L.E. a popular song by Glasgow band HYYTS as it is just perfect to easily sign out the lyrics and make it easier for everyone to join in using sign language.
Katie, said: “Each year I try to sign a song for Deaf Awareness Week, which I post to social media to raise awareness.
“I worked with the Lifestart course who have a deaf student in their class, who was delighted we did something as a group to celebrate Deaf Awareness Week and even though I couldn’t film them signing to share to social media, they were definitely joining in behind the camera.
“This year I chose a song I use when tutoring the FVC Introduction to Sign Language course. The song is by the brilliant Glasgow band, HYYTS who I’ve been lucky enough to interview, and see perform in Cardiff last year as part of the Iris Film Festival, but also saw then at King Tut’s and St Luke’s in Glasgow later in the year.
“The song is perfect for students because there’s a lot of repetition to the song, and once they master the T.H.I.S.T.L.E., letters they generally float along happily on a cloud of signing.”
