HND Health, Fitness and Exercise student Barry Munro is grappling with winning a medal at a prestigious tournament and seeing his lunchtime sports club take off at Forth Valley College.
Confident and enthusiastic Barry, (22) from Devonside, Clackmannanshire won a silver at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) event held in Walsall on 4 April, in the 61kg Bantamweight category – in his first ever fight at that level.
Barry – who also has a blue belt in Jujitsu which is linked to the grappling and wrestling technique – has also seen his Falkirk Campus Lunchtime grappling club go from strength to strength with around eight members, including two lecturers.
Barry, who also took on a heavier opponent recently in a charity Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bout in Alloa Town Hall and won, said: “I have only been doing this for about two and a half years, but it has become a lifestyle for me and I love it. I have got to thank my own coach Chris ‘Macs’ Macateer for helping to get me to this point. It is a sport that really keeps you fit physically and mentally and offers the opportunity to always progress.
“I believe it is a discipline which is very deep and it humbles you. I would recommend anyone to give it a try and come along to my classes at lunchtimes in the Falkirk Campus gym hall.”
Anyone looking to find out more should come along to the Falkirk Campus gym hall on a Monday or Tuesday at 1pm or contact Barry on munromma@hotmail.com
