A new Responsible Tourism course has been launched at Forth Valley College aiming to allow students to learn their trade in tandem with an exciting tourism action plan created by Scottish Canals and the Green Action Trust.

Recruitment for the 16 places available for people living in the Falkirk area is now underway, as FVC offer the unique opportunity to study for a Responsible Tourism - NPA Travel and Tourism - in partnership with Scottish Canals and Green Action Trust and supported and funded through the UK Government’s Community Renewal Fund.

The free, part-time, three month course based at the College’s Falkirk Campus – which starts on Monday 21 March and runs till Friday 10 June 2022 - will allow participants to develop subject specialist and transferrable knowledge and skills while having the opportunity to gain a recognised SQA qualification.

Colin McGeoch, Curriculum Manager in FVC’s Department of Creative Industries, Hospitality and Tourism, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Scottish Canals and the Green Action Trust to offer this exciting new course, which can help transform the tourism industry and help them meet their net zero targets. Through participation in the course, students will also gain a unique understanding and direct experience of responsible tourism in the context of the work of Scottish Canals and Green Action Trust.

“This could well be the ideal course for anyone looking to break into the Tourism industry, those who are looking to change professions or who are working part-time and we can’t wait to hear from those interested in applying.

Course participants will learn about the broader Travel and Tourism Industry in the UK, the Heritage Industry in Scotland and Sustainable Practices in Travel and Tourism through case studies and investigations. They will also have the opportunity for site visits and guest speakers from Scottish Canals, Green Action Trust and other project partners. There will also be a focus on employability skills with the opportunity for a mock application and interview with one of the project partners towards the end of the course.”

The course will be delivered on Mondays and Wednesday afternoons and evenings through a combination of attendance on Forth Valley College’s Falkirk Campus, some online delivery and site visits and guest speakers. On successful completion of the course, participants will have the opportunity to gain a recognised SQA NPA qualification which could provide pathways and progression routes for further study and/or employment.

Entry to the course will be through application via the Forth Valley College website here and an informal discussion with one of the course team to determine suitability and interest.

Forth Valley College also offer a range of full time Travel and Tourism courses from NC and HND through to a BA Degree in Heritage and Tourism in conjunction with University of Stirling. Applications for these courses are also currently open and more information is available here
