New electrical installation facility switched on at FVC
Charlie Simpson

Two new test rig assessment bays at Forth Valley College’s Falkirk Campus are set to click with electricians and engineers keen on gaining City and Guild installation qualifications.

Charles Simpson, a Technician in FVC’s Electrical Safety Department, procured the equipment, installed it all and then tested the kit to make it ready for students who will be attending the City & Guilds 2391-52 Inspection & Testing Course starting in July.

The qualification will help students develop the knowledge and practical skills required to professionally carry out inspection and testing on electrical installations aimed at experienced electrical inspectors (electricians and electrical engineers), who are currently performing inspection, seeking a qualification for carrying out Initial verification and periodic inspection, as well as carrying out a full range of functional electrical tests on both single and three-phase electrical installations.

Charles Simpson, Technician in FVC’s Electrical Safety Department, said: “I have enjoyed installing this new training facility. What a worthwhile assessment and training area is going to be for the students! It really is broadening the scope of the Electrical Safety Department and adds another City and Guilds level course to the portfolio we offer. There are already enquires coming in about the course and if we were to run it tomorrow, I am sure it would be full.”

Alistair McKean, Lead Commercial Trainer, said: “Charlie took this project on like he does every other within the department with professionalism and enthusiasm. He is a very skilled, valued and highly motivated member of the team delivering training/assessment on various courses as well running maintenance projects on existing and new courses.

“This project was part of a collaboration with the Commercial Training and New Business teams identifying the demand from industry for the College to deliver this course which has already seen a large amount of bookings before the launch date.

"Working with support from colleagues Alan Montgomery and Anthony Higgins, Charlie delivered the practical assessment side of the course development project, in line with governing body guidance and Alan focussed on the course training materials including presentations, question banks and assessment documentation. The commercial delivery team for this module is made up of very experienced electrical practitioners that have carried out this role within industry for many years and we are excited to welcome the first students onto the course in July.”
