Modern Apprentice Joiners at Forth Valley College have improved their skillset by completing a new Advanced Craft section of their course.

The apprentices all completed a third year attending the FVC Stirling Campus workshops and benefited from a more challenging course curriculum.

FVC Apprenticeship Officer Irene Kane said “All these apprentices were either funded by their employer or self-funded to continue their studies on the Modern Apprenticeship Carpentry and Joinery Programme. This is an optional third year of studying in the FVC workshops in a four year apprenticeship, which advances their joinery skills.

“During the year they have completed units including Complex Roofs, Specialist Doors, High Class Finishes, Complex Stairs. This is a stepping stone qualification to being a Site Manager, an entry qualification for HNC Construction Management and apprentices can apply for their Gold CSCS card on achieving this qualification.

“With the expertise and guidance of their lecturers Ronnie Millar and Stuart Harkins, they have all successfully completed and achieved their qualification. Congratulations go to them all.

Jade Nelson (22) from Cumbernauld who works for Donaldson Construction in Alloa, said: “The Advanced Craft Joinery year was a bit more challenging than the regular course, but I really enjoyed it quite a lot and I would recommend it 100%.”

James Forsyth (23) from Alva, who works with Dundee based builders QAPM, added: “It was good and the best bit for me was working with more complex drawings. It will benefit me in my career as I have been thinking about how I might progress onto a civil engineering course and it could be a stepping stone for that. I would definitely recommend it.”

Construction Lecturer Ronnie Millar, said: “It’s great to see my advanced craft students completing the course, it gives me a lot of satisfaction to know that I have guided them to complete the course successfully.”

Lecturing colleague Stuart Harkins, added: “The hard work and dedication has finally paid off and I would like to congratulate each and every student on their achievements.”
