Three hospitality students who won this year’s UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year, enjoyed a trip to Barcelona recently as part of their prize.
Accompanied by Chef Lecturer Martin Luti, Marcus Rawding (20) from Coalsnaughton studying for an HND Hospitality Management, Nicole Gray (17) from Bo’ness and Laura Carswell (19) from Doune – both HNC Professional Cookery students, visited the iconic city between Wednesday 26 September and Saturday 1 October.
They had won their prize after competing at the prestigious Skills for Chefs event at the Sheffield City College on Thursday 7 July and served up a first place finish.
Their schedule in Barcelona included a meal at Abac a two Michelin Star restaurant owned by Jordi Cruz who appears as a host on Spain’s Masterchef programme, a visit to the city’s colourful fruit and vegetable market, a workshop at one of their chef guides’ ‘labs’ where they did a course in liquid nitrogen in cooking, a visit to Quimet and Quimet – thought to be the best tapas restaurant in Spain and a tour of the city.
Marcus, said:
“I enjoyed myself very much and learned so much as well. The nitrogen course was so much fun and it was great to try and see all the things that we did.”
Martin Luti, said:
“It was an amazing experience and the students and I had a great time. It will really benefit the students in many different ways. It was a great trip and we are all determined to try to win the competition again next year so we can win another break like this!”
